Ukraine and Russia have initiated an unprecedented prisoner exchange since the conflict first flared up in 2022, with 1,000 detainees from both sides being released in an exchange that represents its largest exchange since 2022. This comes following direct peace talks that took place last week in Istanbul; these negotiations represented their first direct negotiations for over three years, according to sources such as Reuters, AP News, The Times of India, Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Times of India (TTI) as well as New York Post.
A senior Ukrainian official confirmed that an exchange is taking place at the Belarus-Ukraine border; however, this process has yet to conclude and has yet to receive official recognition by Russia. Spectrum Local News.
Trump first made public knowledge of the swap on his social media platform Truth Social and stated, “A major prisoners exchange was just completed between Russia and Ukraine; this could lead to something big”.

The Istanbul talks, lasting less than two hours, produced an agreement for this prisoner exchange but were unsuccessful in producing a ceasefire agreement. Ukraine proposed a 30-day truce period but Russia rejected this idea while upholding demands it considers unacceptable to Ukraine. Prisoner exchange is widely seen as a positive step despite the absence of a ceasefire agreement, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov who underscored its significance by stressing how important it was that all Ukrainian prisoners of war be released back home.
